Green Community Development Initiative

Through our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment, we strive to be a trusted leader in the sustainable management of plastic waste, driving positive environmental, social, and economic change for present and future generations.

Who we are

Green Community Development Initiative Is a non-profit organization incorporated in Uganda. GCDI aims at promoting a circular economy while creating employment opportunities in the local communities through plastic waste collection and recycling. A circular economy addresses environmental challenges by reducing extraction, waste, and pollution while creating economic opportunities for growth, innovation, and jobs.

Mission

Our mission is to establish a leading plastic waste collection and recycling hub dedicated to mitigating the environmental impact of plastic pollution, conserving natural resources, and fostering community empowerment.

Environmental Sustainability

Reducing environmental impact of plastic waste by Implementing innovative recycling technologies and processes to divert plastic waste from landfills and waterways, thereby minimizing pollution and protecting ecosystems. We conduct outreach programs and educational campaigns to raise awareness about plastic pollution, recycling, and the socio-economic benefits of the initiative. We engage with local communities, businesses, and stakeholders to promote recycling awareness and participation. We aim to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and encourage sustainable waste management practices among residents and businesses.

Community Empowerment

Contribute to community development and social empowerment by creating job opportunities, supporting local economies, and promoting environmental education and awareness. We aim to improve the livelihoods and well-being of individuals and communities through providing training and employment opportunities for individuals from marginalized communities, including roles in waste collection, sorting, machine operation, and administration.

Women Empowerment

Support women entrepreneurs in establishing and managing recycling businesses or micro-enterprises focused on plastic waste collection, sorting, or upcycling. We provide access to training, financing, and mentorship to empower women to start their own businesses and become leaders in the waste management sector. We offer skill development and capacity-building programs tailored to the needs of women in the waste management industry. Training in areas such as waste segregation, recycling technologies, business management, and leadership enhances women’s employability and career advancement opportunities. Leadership and Representation: We promote gender diversity and inclusion within the waste management sector by actively recruiting and promoting women in leadership positions. We encourage women to participate in decision-making forums and policy dialogues to amplify their voices and influence positive change in waste management policies and practices.

Regional plastic waste collection hubs

GCDI’s operating model is focused on establishing regional collection hubs in all cities across the country. This is done through partnerships and collaborations with local communities. We facilitate establishment of collection hubs, provide baling machines, conduct training on plastic waste collection, sorting and machine operation. We provide community-based waste management initiatives, including awareness campaigns through educational programs and workshops, clean-up drives and recycling programs across the country.
